Good nutrition is necessary for healthy teeth and gums. It is predicted that 90 percent of Americans will have periodontal disease during their lifetime. Your diet choices can cut your risk of having periodontal disease in half!
Periodontal disease (perio) is a chronic bacterial biofilm infection that destroys the supporting structures around a tooth. If left untreated, perio can cause tooth and jawbone loss. Perio typically is painless, so you likely won't know you have it.
It seems like everyone is on some sort of diet plan—low carb, high cabbage, caveman inspired, celebrity endorsed—the list is endless. No matter what nutrition "plan" anyone follows, it is crucial to give your body the nutrients it needs to keep you healthy. Unfortunately, some diet plans can be harmful to your dental health.
For example, vegetarians and vegans must supply calcium and vitamin D. Some early studies show that nearly 100 percent of those with periodontal disease have vitamin D deficiency.
It's important for everyone to eat complex carbohydrates and foods high in antioxidants, both of which help control inflammation and are lacking in the high protein diets.
Experts suggest you include lots of fruits and vegetables, potatoes, dried beans, seeds, nuts and whole grain foods in your meal planning. Eat foods high in folic acid, zinc and the vitamin Bs.
Perio can only be treated or managed, not cured. That is just one reason why having twice-yearly dental check-ups are so important. We can halt perio's progress and put you on the road to good health.
