Thinking about buying a whitening product on line? Before you click that OK button, read on.
There will always be hucksters who prey on trusting consumers, and Internet tooth whitening product ads are attractive because they get your attention with a free trial offer.
The scam works like this: You open a legitimate Web site such as your favorite TV news site and see an enticing ad with a no-risk, money back guarantee, free trial offer. You give them your credit card number to pay for shipping. You may be jumped to other Web sites to read phony reviews, blogs and endorsements ("as seen on TV") to seal the deal.
Unfortunately, that tempting free trial could cost you $90 each month plus other mystery charges. You unknowingly agreed to purchase more whitening product every month as well as services and products from other unscrupulous companies.
These Web sites use confusing language in their billing terms, and they may be printed in fine print in an obscure location.
Also consider that these products are likely to be ineffective, may injure your soft tissues and cause tooth sensitivity, which we may not be able to treat.
Do your research. There are legitimate online tooth whitening reviews (type in "whitening reviews"), but be cautious and read carefully because the scammers are posting phony reviews to confuse you.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) issued a warning about this scam and listed numerous products. See their Web site for the article and list of products. The BBB recommends that you use their Web site and research products and businesses before you buy.
